Love Hotel Hill is an informal English name for the cluster of love hotels around Dogenzaka and Maruyamacho in Shibuya. It is not an official place name, a single hotel, or a gated attraction. On maps and hotel websites, look for addresses in 道玄坂 (Dogenzaka) and 円山町 (Maruyamacho).
You do not need to understand how every hotel works before visiting the area. Start with the exact address, then check the plan, access instructions and current rules of the property you intend to use.
Where is Love Hotel Hill?
Dogenzaka and neighbouring Maruyamacho are the two key place names to know. A hotel with a Maruyamacho address may still be within the area described in English-language guides as Love Hotel Hill.
Official hotel websites show addresses in both areas. For example, Hotel Sunroad lists a Dogenzaka 2-chome address, while Hotel Core lists an address in Maruyamacho. Save the full address of your destination instead of relying on a general map pin for the area.
From Shibuya Station, follow the access directions published by the property. Hotels are spread across side streets as well as the main Dogenzaka area, so reaching Dogenzaka is not the same as finding a particular entrance.
The Hyakkendana landmark
Another local place name you may see is Hyakkendana, written 百軒店. The Shibuya City Library describes it as a historic shopping district in Dogenzaka 2-chome, marked by a red gate-like entrance.
The gate identifies Hyakkendana; it is not an official entrance to Love Hotel Hill. The surrounding streets also contain restaurants, bars, music venues and other independent businesses.
Shibuya Station or Shinsen Station?
Shibuya is not the only station shown in local access guides. Some properties in Maruyamacho also give directions from Shinsen Station on the Keio Inokashira Line. The best route depends on your starting point and the property’s exact address.
Before leaving the station, open the property’s current access page and save its address. That gives you a precise destination rather than a general neighborhood location.
Is Love Hotel Hill an official place name?
No. It is an informal English name used for the concentration of love hotels around Dogenzaka and Maruyamacho. Maps and official addresses use Dogenzaka (道玄坂) and Maruyamacho (円山町).
How the area developed
The history of the neighbourhood predates the English nickname. According to Shibuya City’s account of local place names, the Kobo-yu bathhouse near Shinsen flourished from the Edo period until around the late nineteenth century and became an early centre of the entertainment district around Maruyama.
In a 2016 Shibuya Culture Project interview, a local hotel-industry representative described pre-war Maruyamacho as a district of traditional restaurants and geisha entertainment. According to his account, some restaurants later gave way to inns and hotels as the character of the district changed.
Hyakkendana is nearby but has a distinct history. The Shibuya City Library describes its development as part of the reconstruction that followed the Great Kanto Earthquake, when well-known businesses from central Tokyo were invited to the area.
These histories overlap geographically, but they should not be treated as a single historical narrative. The present neighbourhood includes hotels, shops, restaurants and cultural venues that developed through different periods.
Why are there many love hotels in this part of Shibuya?
A local hotel-industry representative has linked the hotel district’s development to Maruyamacho’s earlier history as an entertainment and geisha district, where some restaurants were later converted into inns and hotels. This is a historical account of the area, not a description of every hotel operating today.
How to Understand “Rest” and “Stay” Plans
Rest generally means short-term room use, while Stay means an overnight plan. These labels are only the starting point. The applicable hours, included duration, day and room category determine what a plan actually provides.
| Label or detail | What to check |
|---|---|
| Rest / 休憩 | The included duration and the hours during which the plan is available. |
| Stay / 宿泊 | The permitted check-in period and the required check-out time. |
| Service Time | The specified start and end times. It may be a longer daytime plan rather than a fixed duration beginning whenever you arrive. |
| Day and date | Whether weekday, weekend, holiday or special-date conditions apply. |
| Room category | Which rooms qualify for the displayed price. |
A Rest price is not necessarily an hourly rate, and a Stay plan does not necessarily provide the same departure time for every arrival. Published plans from local hotels show that conditions can change according to the day and time. Read the complete plan instead of comparing only the lowest displayed prices.
What is the difference between Rest and Stay at a love hotel?
Rest generally refers to short-term room use, while Stay refers to an overnight plan. Check the included duration, available hours, check-in period and departure time because the labels alone do not define the full conditions.
English information and privacy
An English-language website can help you check rooms, plans and access before visiting. It does not necessarily mean that English-speaking assistance is available at all times or through every stage of the visit.
If you need help with a specific arrival time, room, payment method or other arrangement, contact the property directly. A translated room page alone cannot confirm special arrangements or current availability.
Reception and payment procedures also differ between properties. Do not assume that the word “love hotel” guarantees a completely contactless visit. Check the property’s current instructions if privacy or the level of interaction with staff is important to you.
Can I use a love hotel in Shibuya without speaking Japanese?
An English website may provide enough information to plan your visit, but it does not guarantee English-speaking assistance at the property. If you expect to need help, confirm this directly with the property.
What to check before you go
Keep the destination and plan details together on your phone. This makes it easier to find the entrance and confirm the applicable conditions when you arrive.
- Destination: save the current address and the property’s own access instructions.
- Date and time: check the arrival window and the length of use you need.
- Plan: confirm what is included, when the plan ends and which room category it covers.
- Availability: do not treat a published room description as confirmation that the room is currently available.
- Language: confirm any English-language assistance you expect to need.
- Visitors: if another person will join you, check the property’s current visitor policy directly.
“Love Hotel Hill” is a useful English search term, while Dogenzaka and Maruyamacho are the names that help you navigate the area. Once you have chosen a destination, use its exact address and current information rather than relying on general descriptions of the district.
