Soapland, pink salons, deriheru, and kyabakura are distinct types of adult nightlife businesses in Japan. Soapland, pink salons, and deriheru are associated with adult services, while kyabakura centers on drinks, hospitality, and conversation.
The easiest way to understand the difference is to ask three questions: what kind of service does the business provide, where does the experience take place, and is the name an everyday term or a formal legal category?
Four terms at a glance
| Term | Common meaning | Typical setting |
|---|---|---|
| Soapland | A bathhouse-style adult-service business | Inside the business premises |
| Pink salon / pinsaro | A common term for an adult-service business operating at a fixed location | Inside the venue |
| Deriheru / delivery health | An adult outcall service arranged by a business | A residence, hotel, or other accommodation |
| Kyabakura | A nightlife venue centered on drinks, hospitality, and conversation with hostesses | Inside the venue |
These descriptions explain common usage. The name of a business alone does not determine its exact services, prices, or regulatory status. Those depend on how the individual business operates.
Does “adult nightlife” always mean sexual services?
No. The phrase can include both adult-service businesses and social venues centered on drinks and conversation. That is why checking the individual term matters.
Soapland and pink salon
Soapland: a bathhouse-format business
A soapland is a premises-based adult-service business that operates in bathhouse-style facilities with private rooms. The Tokyo Metropolitan Police lists it as a type of premises-based sex-related special business.
The word should not be interpreted as an ordinary public bath, spa or onsen. The bathhouse setting is part of a specific adult-business format.
Pink salon: commonly shortened to pinsaro
Pink salon is commonly shortened to pinsaro. In everyday Japanese, the term refers to an in-venue adult-service business. Despite the name, a pink salon is not a beauty salon or wellness business.
Unlike “soapland,” pink salon is not presented as a separate named category in the Tokyo Metropolitan Police’s business-category guide. Its precise regulatory treatment cannot be determined from the public-facing name alone. The actual premises and services matter.
Are pink salon and pinsaro different?
No. Pinsaro is the commonly used shortened form of pink salon.
Deriheru
Deriheru is short for “delivery health” and describes an adult outcall service. Instead of receiving the service at rooms operated for customers by the business, the companion travels to a residence or lodging facility after the booking is confirmed.
The Tokyo Metropolitan Police lists this dispatch model as a type of non-store-based sex-related special business. “Non-store-based” describes where the service is provided. It does not mean that the business cannot have an office for administration or booking support.
Is deriheru another type of soapland?
No. Both terms are associated with adult services, but their basic formats are different. A soapland operates at its own premises, while deriheru involves a companion traveling to a separately arranged location.
Kyabakura
A kyabakura is centered on drinks, hospitality and conversation with hostesses. It should not be treated as another name for a sexual-service business.
At a typical kyabakura, hostesses spend time talking with customers and creating a social atmosphere centered on conversation and drinks. The Japanese legal concept of settai, often translated as entertaining or attending to guests, can apply to this type of continued personal hospitality.
English-language guides often use “hostess club” for kyabakura. The name comes from the Japanese expression “cabaret club,” but it does not mean a Western-style stage cabaret or dance show.
Is kyabakura a sexual-service business?
No. In its ordinary meaning, kyabakura is a nightlife venue centered on hospitality, drinks, and conversation. It belongs to a different part of Japan’s nightlife industry from soapland, pink salon and deriheru.

Common names and legal categories
Everyday business names and legal categories are not always identical. The Tokyo Metropolitan Police business-category guide separates businesses that entertain guests in connection with food or drinks from premises-based and dispatch-based sex-related special businesses.
The actual classification depends on factors such as the services provided, how staff interact with customers, the premises and where the service takes place. A sign or English directory listing cannot confirm these points by itself.
Common name
Words such as soapland, pink salon, deriheru and kyabakura are commonly used to describe different types of businesses.
Service setting
The experience may take place inside business premises or at a separately arranged location.
Legal category
This depends on the business’s actual facilities, services and operating method, not only its name.
Does the business name prove that it has the required permission or notification?
No. A public-facing name does not prove the regulatory status of an individual business. Permission and notification requirements depend on the actual type of operation.
A quick way to compare them
When you see one of these terms, start with the following questions:
- What is the business providing? An adult service or hospitality centered on drinks and conversation.
- Where does it take place? At the business premises or at another confirmed location.
- Is the term a common name or a legal category? Do not assume that the two are identical.
Soapland is a premises-based adult-service business with a bathhouse-style setting. Pink salon, or pinsaro, is a common name for an in-venue adult-service business. Deriheru is an outcall model. Kyabakura is a venue-based hospitality format centered on drinks and conversation.
Prices and conditions vary by business. Before visiting or booking, check what is included, where the service takes place and how the total price is calculated and confirmed.
